Thermataper, the all in one insulation and drainage flat roofing system from Kingspan Insulation, has provided the roofing solution for a car park conversion at an NHS Foundation Trust hospital in Sunderland.
The £8.7m conversion, at the Sunderland Royal Hospital on Wearside, involved partial demolition and upward extension of the existing three-storey car park to provide 5,000 m2 of new office and ward accommodation and four new operating theatres and associated ancillary rooms.
The build involved additional construction of a new plant room, which was roofed with 1,000 m2 of Thermataper from Kingspan Insulation.
Thermataper has no significant load bearing implications on an existing structure and has been specially developed by Kingspan Insulation to enhance water drainage from flat roofs, making it the ideal choice for the plant room - a fact confirmed by the Architects, Dunwoodie Architecture and Design who said:
"The new build plant room was to be constructed over, and supported by, the existing hospital roof and any additional weight and deadloads needed to be carefully considered. The Thermataper TT46 LPC/FM offered considerable weight savings against alternative screeding systems. Furthermore, by avoiding additional wet trades and drying out times the tight timescales for the plantroom construction were able to be met. It was also important that the product was manufactured without the use of CFCs/HCFCs and has zero Ozone Depletion Potential."
Thermataper is made from high performance rigid urethane, tapered to provide an adequate fall and prevent water ponding, a problem which often besets flat roofs. The easy to install System eliminates the need for screeding, structural falls or firrings and has major energy-saving benefits with thermal conductivity as low as 0.023 W/m.K.
The roofing material is non-deleterious being CFC/HCFC-free and certified to have Zero Ozone Depletion Potential.
Kingspan Insulation offers a complete design package to achieve a high specification, cost effective solution for rainwater run-off and insulation requirements.
